South Asian agricultural security and pricing issues
Overview
Agricultural concerns in South Asia have transitioned from immediate demands for price relief and cost subsidies to long-term calls for technological investment and research.
Initially, farmer groups in India and Pakistan sought higher support prices to combat rising production costs. In India, the Sugarcane Growers’ Association requested an increase in the Fair and Remunerative Price for sugarcane, citing drought and high labor and fertilizer expenses. In Pakistan, farmer organizations planned protests to demand a clear wheat procurement policy and relief on diesel and electricity prices to avoid selling below production costs.
Subsequently, leadership in Bangladesh and Pakistan shifted focus toward structural improvements in food security. The President of Bangladesh advocated for increased investment in agricultural research and high-yielding rice varieties to achieve a food surplus. Similarly, Pakistan’s Minister for Food Security sought international cooperation to enhance wheat production through genomic research and climate-resilient seeds, aiming to transform the country from self-sufficiency toward becoming an exporter.
