South Korea high-speed rail merger and integration
Overview
South Korea’s Fair Trade Commission approved the merger of state-run Korea Railroad Corporation (KORAIL) with SR Corp, the operator of the Super Rapid Train (SRT). The deal transfers SR’s operations to KORAIL and gives the government a 58.95% stake in SR.
Effective September 1, KTX and SRT services will be unified under the KTX brand. Fares will be aligned to the lower SRT level, resulting in a roughly 10% reduction for three years. To facilitate this, a combined mobile booking platform, “KORAIL+,” has been launched to handle reservations for the merged service. Mileage accrual will also be unified, matching the existing KTX program at 5% of the fare.
The integration aims to significantly boost capacity and service frequency. Daily operations are expected to increase, with seat capacity rising by approximately 15,000 on weekdays and 17,000 on weekends. Specific expansions include additional trips on the Honam and Jeolla Lines, as well as increased services heading to Suseo to improve accessibility to the southeastern metropolitan area.
To manage the transition, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, KORAIL, and SR have established a joint task force. Authorities are conducting intensive training for engineers to certify them for new routes and vehicle types, while officials perform on-site inspections of stations and control centers to ensure safety and operational efficiency.
