As the traditional Kimjang kimchi-making season approaches, efforts to manage rising ingredient costs have emerged from both the private and public sectors. Daesang launched a promotion through its Jungone e-Shop, offering up to 15 percent discounts on Jongga brand products, including packaged kimchi and seasonings, to assist consumers with rising costs. The campaign includes pre-order incentives and specialized varieties of kimchi. Concurrently, the South Korean government announced a 64 billion won stabilization plan. This initiative allocates 44 billion won for agricultural and livestock products and 20 billion won for seafood. The measures aim to provide discounts of up to 40 percent on items such as garlic, radish, and ginger, and up to 50 percent on seafood like salted shrimp. In Seoul, municipal authorities are collaborating with Nonghyup Distribution to offer significant discounts on essential items at select locations to mitigate the financial burden on households amid rising inflation. The government plan, described as the largest scale of support to date, includes specific allocations for cabbage, radish, and pork for boiled meat. To prevent shortages, authorities have pre-secured 46,500 tons of cabbage and 9,000 tons of radish, even as autumn cabbage and radish production is expected to increase by 18.5 percent and 11.1 percent respectively. This intervention follows consumer price index data showing a 2.8 percent year-on-year increase, driven by rising costs in petroleum and processed foods. The government intends to monitor distribution structures and crack down on unfair practices to ensure fiscal support reaches consumers.
