South Korea livestock disease prevention measures
Overview
South Korea is enhancing its infrastructure and surveillance to combat livestock diseases, specifically focusing on avian influenza (AI).
In late September, the government expanded diagnostic capabilities by designating the Gyeonggi Northern Animal Hygiene Testing Laboratory as a specialized institution for AI. This move, alongside the expansion of Lumpy Skin Disease precision testing to 13 provincial laboratories, aims to accelerate quarantine responses by reducing sample transport times.
By early October, authorities intensified preventive measures as migratory bird populations increased significantly. Surveys showed waterfowl numbers rising in several areas, with duck species—highly susceptible to AI—increasing nearly three times compared to the previous year. In response to these rising numbers and increased global AI detections, the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment expanded surveillance sites, while the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs implemented high-risk warnings for poultry farms, established vehicle control zones, and deployed drones for monitoring.
