The Korea Football Association (KFA) appointed Spaniard Robert Moreno as the interim head coach of the South Korean men’s national football team. Moreno, 48, succeeds Hong Myung-bo, who resigned after the team’s group-stage exit from the 2026 World Cup. Moreno’s initial contract covers six international matches scheduled through November 27, 2026. The KFA has included a performance-based option to extend his tenure through the 2027 AFC Asian Cup. He will be supported by an all-Spanish coaching staff. Following an open recruitment process intended to ensure transparency, Moreno expressed that it is “an honor to lead the team.” While he noted he cannot guarantee specific results, he promised to provide “effort, honesty, and respect” to demonstrate his intentions on the pitch. Following his appointment on September 1, Moreno is scheduled to arrive in South Korea this Sunday. Upon his arrival at Incheon International Airport, he will hold a press conference in Cheonan on Monday to announce his first squad. The upcoming international friendly schedule includes matches against Ecuador on September 24, Uruguay on September 28, Venezuela on October 2, and Uzbekistan on October 6. The KFA is also working to schedule additional matches for the November FIFA window. To prepare for these fixtures, Moreno and his staff have developed a roster database featuring four-deep positional depth, incorporating both global talent and domestic K League players.
