South Korea summer water safety drive

In late July 2026, South Korea’s central government inaugurated a new “one‑team” policy council that ties together ministries of interior, education, culture, sports, tourism and labor with regional authorities. The council pledged to transfer labor‑inspection powers for small workplaces to local governments and, importantly for public safety, to reinforce summer water‑safety measures through expanded inspections, safety officers and public‑awareness campaigns.

A few days later, the disaster‑safety bureau, led by Kim Kwang‑yong, announced concrete steps under the council’s framework. From 12 June to 17 August, 5,831 safety personnel will be stationed at water facilities and high‑risk zones, an increase of 439 over the previous year. Free life‑jacket rental points will rise to 606 locations, and additional warning signs, patrols and fines will deter unsafe swimming. The rollout reflects the council’s intent to coordinate central directives with local execution, aiming to prevent swimming‑related accidents during the peak vacation period.
