South Korean air defense supply proposals for Ukraine

Discussions have emerged regarding the potential supply of South Korean Cheongung-II (M-SAM II) air defense systems to Ukraine.

Initially, South Korean lawmaker Yu Yong-won urged the government to consider providing the systems as a defensive measure to protect civilians. Yu argued that the deepening military cooperation between North Korea and Russia necessitates such action and noted that deploying the systems would allow South Korea to acquire “real-world combat data” on how the technology performs against North Korean missiles used in the conflict.

This proposal gained further visibility when Donald Trump shared an opinion column suggesting that the U.S. administration should pressure South Korea to sell its stockpiles to Ukraine to address interceptor shortages. The column suggested that such a move could demonstrate South Korea’s reliability as an ally while providing an opportunity to test the Cheongung-II against North Korean weaponry. To prevent technology leaks to adversaries, the author proposed that the U.S. assist Ukraine in producing lower-cost versions of the Patriot system.
