Recent reports highlight shifting internal dynamics within major South Korean corporations. In the semiconductor sector, parental leave rates at Samsung Electronics and SK hynix have declined simultaneously, dropping to 35.5% and 3.2% respectively. Analysts suggest this trend is driven by the semiconductor industry boom, as employees opt to remain at work to secure high performance bonuses linked to operating profits. Because taking leave can result in being excluded from bonus payments or reduced payouts, experts note these rates may remain low as long as the semiconductor super-cycle continues, potentially counteracting national efforts to address low birth rates. Management trends show divergence among the nation’s top 100 companies. While the total number of non-registered executives rose by 1.6% to 7,137, SK hynix saw a significant increase in its executive count, growing by 72 people (35.5%). This accounts for approximately 66% of the total net increase among the top 100 firms, a disparity attributed to SK hynix’s focus on high-bandwidth memory compared to Samsung Electronics’ more diversified portfolio. Samsung Electronics reported minimal executive growth, with only a single increase. Additionally, Samsung Electronics has completed the free transfer of 126 technologies to 99 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) this year. These technologies, covering mobile, display, and home appliance sectors—including IoT device control and mobile robotics—are part of a long-term program supported by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy to foster a collaborative innovation ecosystem.
