South Korean Geunyang Dream welfare expansion

The ‘Geunyang Dream’ welfare project, an initiative providing immediate food and daily necessities to vulnerable South Korean citizens without requiring complex income verification, is undergoing significant expansion across several regions.

In Chungnam Province and Incheon, local governments are scaling the program to cover more municipalities and districts. In Chungnam, the initiative has already served over 10,000 residents and aims for province-wide coverage by September. Incheon is increasing its operational scale to 14 locations following a pilot phase that assisted approximately 4,000 citizens.

Further expansion is occurring in cities such as Andong and Chungju. In Andong, service frequency is increasing to three times a week, specifically targeting individuals who may fall outside traditional welfare systems, including undocumented migrants or those with debt issues. Similarly, the Chungju General Social Welfare Center is increasing its service to three days a week. Across these regions, the program functions as a gateway to long-term support, using the distribution of goods to conduct consultations and connect residents to professional counseling and broader social safety nets.
