South Korean political opposition to Lee administration

Political tensions in South Korea have centered on criticisms of President Lee Jae-myung’s administration by the People Power Party. Initially, opposition leaders targeted the administration’s efforts to address “marriage penalties” intended to combat low birth rates. Lawmakers argued that the government’s own real estate and loan regulations were the root causes of the difficulties facing young citizens and called for structural reforms rather than subsidies.

As the political situation evolved, the focus shifted toward controversies regarding constitutional amendments. Opposition leaders demanded that President Lee declare he will not seek re-election to ensure that debates over changing the presidential system, such as moving to a four-year dual-term model, are not used for personal political gain or to mitigate legal risks.
