South Korean stock market performance divergence and banking rate inversions

The South Korean stock market has exhibited a growing disconnect between corporate earnings and individual stock performance. In late August, despite Q2 operating profits exceeding estimates by 10.97%, the number of stocks receiving target price downgrades significantly outnumbered those receiving increases, suggesting market corrections were outweighing earnings improvements. By late September, this trend evolved into a sharp divergence between index levels and individual stock movements. While the KOSPI maintained levels above 7,000, the number of stocks hitting daily upper limits or 52-week highs declined sharply compared to earlier in the year. Instead, a surge in stocks hitting 52-week lows was observed. Analysts attribute this to capital concentration in large-cap semiconductor leaders like Samsung Electronics and SK hynix, while high interest rates continue to pressure small and medium-sized enterprises. By late September 2026, investment returns showed further divergence. KOSPI 200 tracking ETFs, such as the KODEX 200, became the top performing asset with an 80.76% return, significantly outperforming bank savings accounts which averaged approximately 1.99%. Other high-performing assets included WTI crude oil and domestic active equity funds. Simultaneously, the banking sector faced scrutiny over an interest rate inversion. Data indicated that for many banks, the average interest rate for refinancing loans is higher than for new loans. This trend was observed in 11 out of 16 banks for mortgage loans and 10 out of 16 banks for credit loans. Lawmakers have since called for a review of refinancing systems to ensure they effectively reduce the interest burden on consumers.
