The Southampton FC spying controversy, referred to as ‘Spygate’, involved a ‘contrived and determined plan’ to monitor the training sessions of Oxford United, Ipswich Town, and Middlesbrough. An EFL disciplinary commission previously found that manager Tonda Eckert orchestrated these activities to gain a competitive advantage. As a consequence of the scandal, Southampton was expelled from the previous season’s Championship play-offs and received a four-point deduction for the current campaign. Following an investigation into misconduct occurring between December 2025 and May 2026, the Football Association (FA) issued sanctions against Eckert. He was found guilty of three breaches of FA Rule E3.1 and received a £28,000 fine. Additionally, the FA imposed a suspended six-week ban from all football activity, which will be triggered only if further spying activities are detected through the end of the 2027/28 season. Eckert, who claimed he was unaware that such actions breached regulations, will remain in his role at Southampton. Southampton owner Dragan Solak expressed satisfaction with the ruling, noting that the club has already suffered significant penalties and that the manager has learned from the incident. The club has stated that measures have been implemented to prevent future errors in judgment.
