Southeast Asian durian production and Chinese demand
Overview
Southeast Asian nations are increasingly prioritizing durian cultivation to meet high demand from China, the world’s largest market for the fruit. In Laos, a Chinese entrepreneur has launched a $28 million joint venture to develop a large-scale plantation in Vientiane Province, leveraging new railway and highway infrastructure to reduce logistics costs for exports to China.
Across the region, farmers are shifting from traditional crops like rubber and coffee to durian. However, the market is becoming highly competitive; since China permitted Vietnamese imports in 2022, Vietnam has captured approximately 50.37% of China’s fresh durian imports, slightly ahead of Thailand’s 49.29%.
As production expands in Southeast Asia and China increases its own domestic cultivation, concerns regarding oversupply and falling prices are rising. To mitigate dependency on the Chinese market, some producers, such as those in Thailand, are attempting to expand export reach to India, the European Union, and the United States.
