Southeast Asian MSME financing challenges

Overview

Discussions at regional investment forums have highlighted significant financing gaps for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Southeast Asia. In Indonesia, the Indonesia Impact Alliance (IIA) estimates an annual funding gap of US$ 50.8 billion for businesses requiring between US$ 100,000 and US$ 2 million. This segment, described as the ‘missing middle’, often fails to secure capital because many impact investors maintain minimum investment thresholds of US$ 1 million.

In Indonesia, gender disparity remains a critical issue; although women-led businesses represent 64.5 percent of MSMEs, they face obstacles such as limited credit history and collateral. Data suggests a growing reliance on digital credit as an alternative for these entrepreneurs.

In Malaysia, Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) has called for the Islamic finance industry to expand its support for MSMEs, focusing on economic productivity and sustainable development. The central bank highlighted the iTEKAD social finance initiative, which has provided entrepreneurship and protection programs to nearly 16,000 participants.
