A later study published in *Nature* (2026) presented high‑resolution measurements from an underwater observatory about two kilometres deep on the edge of a rift valley. The instruments captured the same rapid subsidence—up to 4.2 m within six days—and revealed an initial drop of roughly 1.2 m in just one hour, recorded by hydrophones, acoustic ranging devices and pressure sensors. These observations directly link the deformation to a shallow magma reservoir draining during the intrusion, constituting the first detailed, real‑time record of magma‑driven subsidence on the deep‑sea floor.
Together, the multi‑instrument records delineate the complete sequence from magma intrusion and eruption to seafloor uplift, fault slip, and subsequent collapse, offering unprecedented insight into plate‑tectonic spreading at mid‑ocean ridges.
