The COSAFA Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in Maputo, Mozambique, have concluded with South Africa successfully defending their regional title. In the final held at ABB Stadium in Matola, South Africa’s under-20 team, Amajita, defeated hosts Mozambique 2-1. Oarabile Booysen opened the scoring for South Africa in the 27th/28th minute, followed by a quick equalizer from Mozambique’s Martinho Começar. The winning goal was scored by Steven Mendes via a penalty in the 58th minute. Mozambique finished the match with ten men after defender Milton Macombe received a straight red card following a VAR review. South Africa completed the tournament with a perfect record of five wins from five matches. As a result of their performance, both South Africa and Mozambique have qualified for the 2027 TotalEnergies CAF Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana. In the third-place play-off, Zambia secured the bronze medal with a 3-0 victory over Namibia. Steven Mendes finished the tournament as the top scorer, earning the Golden Boot with six goals. Following the tournament, Kaizer Chiefs academy prospects Takalani Mazhamba and Steven Mendes received individual recognition. Mazhamba, the youngest goalkeeper to feature for Kaizer Chiefs in the Premier Soccer League era, was named the tournament’s goalkeeper of the competition after conceding only three goals in five matches. DStv Diski Challenge coach Vela Khumalo highlighted Mendes as a special talent with the potential to transition into the Kaizer Chiefs senior squad.
