Southern California coastal storm damage

Overview

In response to the threat of three Pacific hurricanes, including Hurricane Marie, Newport Beach accelerated the construction of a massive sand wall. City officials deployed extra contractors to build protective berms measuring 20 feet high and 20 feet wide, aiming to complete the work in four days to mitigate risks from high surf, rain, and flooding.

Following the passage of Hurricane Marie, powerful waves caused significant coastal damage and erosion across Southern California. In Malibu, a local state of emergency was declared after a sinkhole opened in an oceanfront driveway, leading to the evacuation of residents and the red-tagging of 31 homes. In Dana Point, high tides and swells resulted in eight red-tagged and three yellow-tagged homes. Local crews have since worked to rebuild shoreline barriers using boulders to protect properties from further erosion.
