The telecommunications industry is facing potential disruption from SpaceX’s efforts to enter the mobile market. Initially, T-Mobile’s outgoing CFO, Peter Osvaldik, dismissed SpaceX’s Starlink Mobile strategy as “laughable” and “not fathomable.” Osvaldik argued that the proposed use of femtocells would require over a billion units to achieve outdoor coverage and noted that SpaceX lacks the radio spectrum necessary to compete with major US carriers. However, the competitive landscape shifted following news that SpaceX secured mobile frequencies in the United States. With FCC approval to deploy up to 15,000 satellites, SpaceX intends to provide direct-to-smartphone connectivity. This development led to a significant decline in Deutsche Telekom shares, which dropped approximately 7.94 percent to 24.70 euros, as SpaceX is viewed as a potential competitor to T-Mobile US, a major growth driver for the Deutsche Telekom group. Amidst this stock volatility, Deutsche Telekom has outlined long-term strategic goals involving artificial intelligence. The company aims to achieve gross savings of approximately 2.5 billion euros by 2030 through AI-driven automation in customer service, network operations, software development, and administration. Additionally, Deutsche Telekom expects its AI-related B2B revenue outside the US to grow from an estimated 250 million euros in 2026 to 800 million euros by 2030.
