Starshield service restrictions disrupt Ukrainian military drone missions

Ukrainian officials have accused SpaceX of implementing sudden restrictions on Starshield, the military-grade satellite service used by Ukrainian forces. The new operational limits reportedly prevent terminals from maintaining connectivity when traveling at speeds exceeding 160 kilometers per hour (approximately 100 mph).

Serhiy Beskrestnov, a presidential adviser on military technology, stated that these changes were introduced without prior notification to the Ukrainian armed forces, leading to the disruption or cancellation of several critical missions, including drone operations and frontline logistics. The 7th Rapid Reaction Brigade reported that even at lower speeds, connection drops of 10 to 20 seconds occurred, making drone control difficult.

Elon Musk responded to the controversy by clarifying that Starshield is owned and controlled by the US government, not SpaceX. He stated that any decisions regarding usage limits or speed restrictions are made by the US military and, ultimately, the President. President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed deep concern, calling the restrictions a ‘big mistake’ that could lead to significant human losses by hindering Ukraine's ability to defend against Russian attacks.

The service disruptions coincide with increased Russian strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure and have raised questions regarding the political influence of American technology on the conflict.
