SpaceX transition from Falcon to Starship rockets

Overview

SpaceX is transitioning its launch strategy to prioritize the Starship rocket system over its existing Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy fleet. CEO Elon Musk indicated that once Starship achieves a reliable launch frequency of several times per week, engineering and production resources will be reallocated to enable a goal of multiple launches per day.

This transition involves a gradual phase-out of the Falcon program. While most commercial Falcon 9 missions could cease by 2028, NASA-contracted missions to the International Space Station may continue until at least 2030. Recent operations include the successful deployment of Starlink V2 Mini satellites and the recovery of a Starship upper stage from the Indian Ocean to gather data on thermal shielding and structural integrity.

To support the Starship program, SpaceX plans a $100 billion investment to construct a second, larger spaceport in Louisiana at a former Exxon site. This facility, located in Vermilion Parish, is intended to support heavy-lift capabilities for interplanetary missions. Construction could begin as early as late 2027, with initial operations potentially starting in 2030.
