The unusually early 2026 grape harvest in Spain has continued to broaden. On 27 July, Viñedos y Bodegas Asensio Carcelén in the DOP Jumilla started picking early‑ripening Syrah in the Paraje de la Cañada del Judío, marking the earliest recorded start for the zone. The same day, the growers’ association in the neighbouring Montilla‑Moriles area reported a projected harvest of about 32 million kg of grapes – roughly 50 % more than the previous year, which suffered from downy mildew. The season, described as the earliest in Europe, has already begun with early‑white varieties such as Moscatel, while red varieties and the native Pedro Ximénez are expected later in the campaign. These developments complement earlier early harvest reports from Bierzo, Jerez and the historic winery Juvé & Camps, reinforcing a nationwide shift driven by abundant winter and spring precipitation that stored water in the vines and accelerated ripening across multiple Spanish wine regions. In late July, wineries in Castilla‑La Mancha began harvesting grapes in July for the first time, a change linked by the regional agriculture minister to unprecedented heat—temperatures above 40 °C in May and a hot, dry July. The Spanish Wine Federation warned that such forward‑shifting harvests could reduce overall yields. Meanwhile, in Extremadura’s Tierra de Barros, the harvest commenced in August with vines in excellent condition after favorable autumn and winter rains, but growers highlighted persistent market pressures, low wine prices, export challenges and a chronic shortage of seasonal labor that threaten the viability of family vineyards.
