Spain Bus-VAO lane pilot on A‑2

Overview

In early August 2026 Spain’s traffic authority, the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT), began a pilot of a dynamic Bus‑VAO lane on the A‑2 motorway serving the Madrid‑Alcalá de Henares corridor. The first snapshot (1 August) presented the lane as part of a broader summer traffic operation, noting its activation between Madrid and Torrejón with restricted periods from 07:00‑09:00 and, from the second week, an additional outbound window of 15:00‑17:00. Enforcement would rely on balises, variable‑message signs and licence‑plate monitoring.

A later snapshot (4 August) clarified the implementation: the left‑most lane switches between a restricted Bus‑VAO mode and normal flow, initially limited to 07:00‑09:00 in both directions, with the 15:00‑17:00 outbound restriction added from the second week. Access is limited to buses, high‑occupancy vehicles, motorcycles and authorised electric cars, with ten inter‑urban bus lines slated to use the lane. The pilot aims to prioritize public transport and improve road‑capacity management on one of Madrid’s busiest approaches.
