In late July 2026, Spain’s Ministry of Equality, led by Ana Redondo, convened a crisis committee to address a sharp rise in gender‑based murders, especially in Andalusia where nine women were killed. The committee brought together officials from the ministries of Equality, Interior and Justice, the Prosecutor’s Office, the General Council of the Judiciary and regional governments, and began debating measures such as recalibrating judicial and police assessments of victims and improving support for orphaned children. A week later, later the ministry announced a semi‑annual monitoring system to track the implementation of the 74 recommendations produced by the crisis committees. The system covers nine thematic areas and includes new awareness campaigns, media‑reporting guidelines, and enhanced training for judges, police, health workers and social services, as well as tighter inter‑administrative coordination and education‑sector actions to prevent normalization of gender‑based violence. By early August, the Interior Ministry’s VioGen database recorded 104,666 active gender‑based‑violence cases, of which 1,165 were high‑risk and 14 extreme‑risk. The data show 53,818 cases involving minors and 13,464 flagged as of special relevance. The highest concentrations of active cases are in Andalusia (27,885), the Valencian Community (17,111) and Madrid (12,591). The semi‑annual tracking system, now operational, is reviewing progress on the 74 recommendations across the nine thematic areas, involving the Interior and Health ministries, the Prosecutor’s Office, the General Council of the Judiciary, security forces and all autonomous communities. So far in 2026, 32 women have been killed in gender‑based violence, including six murders within a little‑over‑a‑week period in July.
