In mid-October 2026, Spain implemented various traffic restrictions to manage vehicle circulation and safety. Initially, heavy goods vehicle circulation restrictions were applied across the country, particularly following a holiday weekend. These measures included prohibitions on special transport, dangerous goods, and vehicles requiring specific authorizations. While the DGT manages national territory, regional authorities in Catalonia, the Basque Country, and Navarre maintained independent competencies and specific route limitations. Subsequently, new proposed amendments to the General Traffic Regulations were introduced to address safety during heavy snowfall. These measures include a ban on overtaking on highways and expressways when snow conditions significantly impact traffic flow. Under these rules, motorists must remain in the right-hand lane, with specific lane allocations reserved for emergency services and winter maintenance vehicles. Violators of these snowfall-related restrictions face a fine of 200 euros. On October 22, the Spanish Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) announced that heavy vehicle circulation restrictions would continue through the end of October to improve road safety and mobility. Specifically, on Sunday, October 25, from 3:00 PM to midnight, prohibitions will apply to special transport vehicles and those carrying dangerous goods requiring ADR orange warning panels. These rules cover all DGT-controlled national territory, excluding Catalonia, the Basque Country, and Navarra. Authorities anticipate these measures may intensify during the All Saints' Day holiday period in early November.
