Throughout 2026, Spain has maintained its global leadership in transplantation and blood donation through significant technological advancements and regional mobilization. In surgical innovation, Spain has pioneered several procedures, including the first robotic ovarian tissue reimplantation in Valencia and a groundbreaking robotic liver transplant for an infant in Córdoba. Surgeons in Vigo also presented the first partial heart transplant in Spain, designed to grow with pediatric patients. Additionally, the Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre in Madrid successfully performed a rare simultaneous intestine-pancreas transplant. The medical community has also embraced new protocols, such as the first national guidelines permitting organ transplants between HIV-positive donors and recipients. Blood donation efforts have faced seasonal challenges. While Galicia reported record donations in 2025, Castilla y León saw a 5.5% decline in the first half of 2026, with plasma donations dropping by 13.8%.
