Spain press freedom and government surveillance allegations

In Spain, allegations have surfaced regarding the Ministry of the Interior’s use of leaked documents to target specific journalists. Critics claim these documents identify media professionals who do not follow the official government narrative, specifically targeting independent outlets such as Libertad Digital and Radio Libertad by labeling them as spreading ‘disinformation’ or holding ‘radical’ views. This is viewed by some as an attempt to undermine press independence.

In response, Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska defended the creation of a dossier by the Ministry’s Communication Office that classifies journalists ideologically. He characterized the file as an “internal working document” designed to help the ministry understand news trends and improve message delivery, asserting it has no “spurious purpose.” He maintained that the ministry does not differentiate between media outlets or journalists when providing information.

Recent reports suggest that resources intended for public security may be diverted to investigate the ideological profiles and activities of journalists and commentators. Critics have characterized these actions as an authoritarian move that undermines the rule of law and the independence of the press in Spain.
