Spain’s Social Security system has seen significant shifts in its contributor and workforce demographics. Data from June indicated that the ratio of workers to pensioners rose to 2.37, up from 2.08 in 2016. This change was driven by a 26.5% increase in contributors compared to an 11.1% increase in pensioners over the same ten-year period. By July, the total number of social security contributors reached a record high of 22.5 million. A notable driver of this growth was the foreign workforce, which exceeded 3.5 million affiliates for the first time. Foreign workers now represent 15.6% of the total workforce, with the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration attributing this rise to the summer tourism season and a migration regularization process completed in June. As of July, the average number of foreign workers registered was 3,512,223, marking a 13.6% year-on-year increase that significantly outpaced the 2.9% growth of the overall system. This surge is largely attributed to an extraordinary regularization process launched in late April, which resulted in approximately 262,475 individuals being registered by July 30. Foreign workers are heavily represented in key sectors, accounting for 32.9% of hospitality workers, 28% in agriculture, and 26.6% in construction. Morocco is the largest contributor of affiliates with over 415,000, followed by Colombia, Romania, and Venezuela. Regionally, foreign employment saw notable annual increases in the Canary Islands (11.36%) and Castilla-La Mancha (14.58%). Labor unions have highlighted the economic importance of these workers while calling for more efficient administrative processes to manage the influx and reduce bureaucracy.
