Spain women's national football team head coach Sonia Bermúdez is beginning a new project with the senior team as they prepare for the 2027 Women's World Cup in Brazil. Following the official release of the squad for upcoming friendlies against the United States, the Spanish roster includes players such as Oihane Hernández and Ainhoa Marín. However, the team faces significant absences due to injury, including key players Aitana Bonmatí, Olga Carmona, and Jana Fernández. Additionally, FC Barcelona attacker Vicky López has been ruled out of the squad for both matches due to physical issues. In her place, Bermúdez has called up Juventus forward Alba Redondo, who is expected to join the 24-player squad in Las Rozas on October 5. In response, the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) has also announced its squad for the October series. The Olympic champions will face the world’s top-ranked team on October 10 at Audi Field in Washington, D.C., where the U.S. will honor retired defender Crystal Dunn, and on October 13 at Subaru Park in Chester, Pennsylvania. Notable returns to the USWNT squad include veteran forward Mallory Swanson, following maternity leave, and Ashley Sanchez, returning after a two-year absence. Other call-ups include Washington Spirit players Trinity Rodman and Tara Rudd. Coach Emma Hayes described the matches as a “critical test against elite competition” as the U.S. prepares for 2027 Women’s World Cup qualifying. The goalkeeper position remains a focus, with Claudia Dickey among those competing for the starting role.
