Overview

In early July 2026 Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced his first official visit to Algeria in almost six years, seeking to repair relations that had been frozen since March 2022 when Spain endorsed Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara. Algeria had responded by suspending the 1988 friendship treaty and imposing trade restrictions that cost Spanish firms about €3.2 billion.

Sánchez arrived in Algiers on 20 July with a ministerial delegation and executives from Repsol, Naturgy, Moeve and Enagás. The talks re‑activated the friendship treaty and launched a new phase of cooperation in energy, trade and investment. Spain aims to raise Algerian gas imports by roughly 10 % through the Medgaz pipeline and to double LNG deliveries, while also exploring green‑hydrogen projects, defence‑technology links and water‑resource management.

On 21 July Sánchez and President Abdelmadjid Tebboune publicly framed the partnership as strategic and friendly, stressing that it extends beyond the Western Sahara dispute. The rapprochement coincided with a sharp migrant surge at the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. The government deployed the army, installed a 500‑metre floating barrier and declared the situation under control, while Sánchez sent a letter to EU partners urging a coordinated response. The developments set the agenda for an upcoming Spain‑Algeria summit and mark a broader realignment of Spain’s Maghreb policy, while the Western Sahara position remains unchanged.
