In 2026, Spain’s agricultural sector faced significant climate-related damages, with Agroseguro projecting total indemnities of 441 million euros. Between January 1 and August 26, approximately 1.28 million hectares of insured land were affected by extreme weather, including floods, hail, frost, storms, and intense heat. Crop losses were estimated at nearly 326 million euros, impacting sectors such as vineyards, fruit trees, vegetables, and citrus. Additionally, wildfires affected 16,377 hectares of insured land, leading to expected indemnities of roughly 2.7 million euros. August storms alone contributed approximately 50 million euros in insured losses. August 2026 has been identified as the month with the highest level of claims in the history of Spanish agricultural insurance. Severe hailstorms and storms throughout the month damaged roughly 54,600 hectares, with the majority of these damages attributed to hail affecting nearly 49,200 hectares. Impacted crops include vineyards, almonds, persimmons, citrus, corn, sunflower, and vegetables. Regional damage was widespread, with significant impacts reported in the Valencian Community, Murcia, Aragon, Castilla-La Mancha, La Rioja, Navarra, and Catalonia. To address these increasing risks, the Spanish government raised its allocation for the 2026 Insurance Plan from 315 million to 344 million euros to support farmers and ranchers.
