The Spanish government has initiated the distribution of subsidies to farmers to mitigate rising fertilizer costs as part of a 700 million euro Integral Response Plan to the Middle East Crisis. Initial nationwide disbursements involved approximately 249,376 farmers receiving a total of 494.57 million euros. In Extremadura, over 18,000 farmers were allocated 33.16 million euros, primarily in the province of Badajoz. The Unión de Pequeños Agricultores y Ganaderos (UPA) criticized the aid as “all things considered insufficient” to cover actual cost increases and called for more regional support. Recent distributions include 23 million euros for roughly 31,000 farmers in Jaén, providing up to 92.5 euros per hectare for irrigated land and 38.3 euros for non-irrigated land. In Cuenca, the Government of Castilla-La Mancha released over 2 million euros in Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) payments, including Basic Income Support for Sustainability. In Castilla-La Mancha, the agricultural organization ASAJA is demanding that future PAC funding maintain distinct pillars, arguing that direct aid should not be diverted to rural development policies. The regional government has announced it will allocate 8.8 million euros from the EU agricultural reserve to help the sector manage rising fuel and fertilizer costs. By August 31, 2026, Spain received over 5.16 billion euros in payments from the European Agricultural Guarantee Fund (FEAGA), with Andalusia, Castilla y León, and Castilla-La Mancha receiving over 57% of the total. To address ongoing liquidity issues, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food has initiated a 2,691 million euro advance payment of 2026 PAC direct aid. This measure, which allows autonomous communities to advance up to 75% of total aid, is voluntary. In La Rioja, 11.26 million euros has been disbursed to 3,329 producers, while Navarra has begun distributing 63.3 million euros to 8,420 professionals. Regional implementation of these funds has accelerated.
