Spanish beach water contamination incidents

Overview

Authorities in different Spanish regions have issued warnings and restrictions regarding beach water quality due to bacterial contamination.

In Tenerife, the Güímar City Council banned swimming at El Cabezo Beach and Playa de Perros after the Canary Islands Health Service detected intestinal enterococci levels at 410 colony-forming units per 100 milliliters, exceeding the local limit of 200 ufc/100 ml. This was classified as a “short-term contamination episode.”

In Málaga, officials advised avoiding the Campo de Golf, Sacaba, Misericordia, and San Andrés beaches following the detection of E. coli. This contamination was attributed to heavy rainfall causing controlled sewage overflows in the city’s drainage systems. In response, authorities have activated protocols for cleaning and signage, while noting a long-term sanitation reform strategy planned through 2029.
