Spain has initiated significant defense spending and modernization efforts. The government committed over 22.6 billion euros to defense contracts through 2035 via Special Modernization Programs, targeting major industrial players like Airbus, Indra, Escribano, and Navantia for projects including tracked and wheeled support vehicles and frigate modernization. Following these broad commitments, the Spanish Ministry of Defense awarded a 258.4 million euro contract for the Integral Information Infrastructure for Defense (I3D). This project aims to modernize telecommunications for the Armed Forces, covering mobile communications, satellite links, and secure videoconferencing to ensure interoperability with NATO and the European Union. The I3D framework is divided into eight distinct lots involving companies such as Telefónica, Vodafone, TRC, Zelenza, Telefónica-Sphera, and Hisdesat. Specific contract details include TRC being awarded a 15.8 million euro lot to provide secure and resilient videoconferencing services for military personnel and Ministry officials. Additionally, Vodafone secured a 24 million euro contract to renew mobile services for the I3D infrastructure. Vodafone’s bid was noted as the highest-rated based on technical and economic criteria, surpassing its closest competitor by 11.25 points. This award builds on Vodafone’s existing defense sector presence, which includes providing a private 5G network for the Military Emergencies Unit (UME) and services to the Civil Guard.
