Spanish Democratic Memory Law site designations

Overview

Spain is designating various sites as Places of Democratic Memory under the Democratic Memory Law 20/2022 to preserve the history of the Spanish Civil War and the Francoist dictatorship.

In A Coruña, the Pazo de Meirás, which served as Francisco Franco’s summer residence between 1938 and 1975, has been officially recognized. The estate was originally acquired through forced contributions during the war. Following a 2020 judicial ruling that annulled the donation to the Franco family, the property has become part of the national heritage.

Additionally, the islands of San Simón and Santo Antón in the Vigo estuary have been declared Places of Democratic Memory. These islands functioned as a penal colony from 1936 to 1943, housing over 5,600 Republican prisoners. The designation acknowledges the high mortality rates caused by overcrowding and poor conditions, as well as the role of local women, known as ‘madriñas’, who provided support to the inmates. The move aims to ensure moral reparation for victims and preserve the memory of human rights violations.
