Spanish emergency medical response enhancements

Overview

Spanish health services and regional authorities are implementing various initiatives to improve emergency medical responses for stroke and cardiac events.

In Andalucía, researchers evaluated the GTTA54 protocol, a six-step telephone triage guide for suspected stroke patients. A study of nearly 44,000 emergency calls between 2020 and 2024 indicated that this structured protocol increased diagnostic sensitivity and reduced undertriage cases. Additionally, the 061 Emergency Center has conducted basic first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training for thousands of citizens.

Other regions are focusing on equipment and specialized training. In Cuenca, 52 local clinics received digital electrocardiographs and defibrillators to facilitate faster assessments in remote areas. Meanwhile, in Salamanca, the ‘Salamanca Cardioprotegida’ program provides workshops for sports entities and facility staff to teach the identification of cardiorespiratory arrest and the use of semi-automatic external defibrillators.
