Disciplinary actions have been issued within Spanish football following incidents involving fan conduct. The RFEF Discipline Committee sanctioned Rayo Vallecano with a 6,000 euro fine and a partial closure of the Vallecas stadium for one match. This followed a LaLiga match against Athletic Club that was halted in the 25th minute after fans threw objects onto the pitch to protest club president Raúl Martín Presa. The committee rejected the club’s attempt to place sole responsibility on ultra groups, holding the club accountable for the disturbance. Following the disruption, Spain’s anti-violence commission has proposed significant fines and stadium bans for 12 Rayo Vallecano supporters. One individual faces a 5,000 euro fine and a one-year ban, while 11 others face 3,000 euro fines and six-month bans. During the protest, supporters displayed scarves demanding the president’s immediate departure. Separately, FIFA has upheld sanctions against the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) regarding Islamophobic chants and the whistling of the Egyptian national anthem during a friendly match between Spain and Egypt at the RCDE Stadium. The chants, which included the phrase ‘musulmán el que no bote’ (the Muslim is the one who does not jump), were reported by match officials. FIFA noted the chants were heard twice during the match. FIFA imposed a 20,000 USD fine and a mandate to close at least 15% of the seats at the RCDE Stadium during Spain’s next home friendly. While the RFEF argued the chants did not constitute discriminatory behavior, FIFA rejected the appeal, maintaining that terms can be discriminatory when used as an ‘insult, taunt, or marker of inferiority.’ The restricted seats may be occupied by special interest groups, such as families or anti-discrimination organizations, provided a plan is submitted 15 days in advance. Spanish player Lamine Yamal condemned the behavior as ‘disrespectful and intolerable,’ labeling those responsible as ‘ignorant and racist.’ The RFEF has indicated it may appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
