In early August 2026, the Spanish government announced a reduction in special hydrocarbon tax relief for gasoline and diesel, lowering the relief from 15 cents to 10 cents per litre. This measure, intended to address economic effects from the war in Iran, also included the removal of a previous 10% VAT reduction on fuels. Industry groups warned that these changes would lead to direct price increases for consumers. Following these initial adjustments, the government announced a subsequent policy to implement a 20-cent reduction in diesel prices, though this specific price cut was not extended to gasoline. On August 14, 2026, officials clarified that the diesel discount would increase to 20 cents per litre starting in September. This decision was triggered by an emergency safeguard clause after diesel prices rose by 15.7% in July compared to the previous year, surpassing the 15% threshold required to activate motorist assistance. This new discount is four times higher than the five-cent reduction originally scheduled for September. In contrast, petrol prices rose by only 7.3% year-on-year in July, remaining below the government’s trigger point. Consequently, the petrol discount will proceed as planned, reducing to five cents per litre in September. The Ministry of Economy stated that this mechanism is intended to provide the “highest level of protection to fuels experiencing the most severe price increases.” As of September 1, 2026, these new tax discounts have been implemented. Diesel drivers receive a 20-cent per litre reduction in the Hydrocarbon Tax (IEH), up from the 10-cent discount applied in August. Meanwhile, the gasoline tax discount has decreased from 10 cents to 5 cents per litre as part of a gradual withdrawal of support measures.
