Spanish Imperial Eagle monitoring for West Nile virus
Overview
The Junta de Andalucía has implemented a monitoring program using GPS transmitters on Spanish Imperial Eagle chicks to track species expansion and detect the West Nile virus. Because the eagles are highly sensitive to the infection, they serve as “sentinel animals” for public health.
Initially, efforts focused on fitting three chicks in Cádiz to provide an early warning system. The program has since expanded, with 29 transmitters installed across key regions including Doñana Natural Space, Granada, and Cádiz.
The utility of this technology was demonstrated when the system identified two marked chicks in Doñana with poor physical condition. Following their deaths, diagnostic testing confirmed they were positive for the West Nile virus, allowing authorities to declare infection foci and implement mosquito control measures to protect local populations.
