Spanish municipalities are increasingly implementing solar energy projects to drive ecological transitions and reduce electricity costs. Local leaders have advocated for direct access to European Union funding, such as Next Generation EU funds, to manage sustainability projects like improved public lighting and local energy production. Specific implementations include the expansion of photovoltaic installations in the Balearic Islands to serve public buildings like hospitals and schools. In other regions, municipal solar plants have generated significant economic returns through a combination of European subsidies and electricity production value. Additionally, the establishment of local energy communities is allowing residents and businesses to access renewable electricity with reduced energy bills and no initial investment. In Santa Pola, the City Council has launched a Local Energy Community (CEL) focused on collective self-consumption. Developed with technical and legal advice from Grupo Enercoop, the project utilizes two 100 kW municipal photovoltaic installations at the CEIP Virgen de Loreto and the José Antonio Alemañ Sports Center. The combined 200 kW capacity is expected to generate over 300,000 kWh annually, potentially covering up to 50% of the energy demand for approximately 200 participating families and businesses. Participation is free and requires no initial investment or changes to current electricity providers.
