Municipalities in Spain have experienced administrative errors regarding waste collection taxes. In the Mancomunidad de la Ribera, the implementation of a new management program led to overcharged tax receipts during the first half of 2026. The entity announced that refunds would occur in October and November, with all incorrect receipts to be administratively annulled by the end of the year. The political group Contigo Tudela has responded by requesting an audit from the Cámara de Comptos and seeking to declare the 2026 tax procedure null and void. Similarly, the City Council of In Talavera de la Reina acknowledged Reina, a technical error that caused duplicate waste tax charges for residents using direct debit. This issue followed a significant increase in the tax rate. While the rate, where annual costs for a typical family rose from approximately 67 euros to 123 euros; in some cases, families were charged 247 euros. The municipal government government, a coalition of PP and Vox, stated they are working to cancel the charges centrally and assured taxpayers that refunds would be processed automatically, automatically without the need for individual claims. The opposition PSOE criticized the administration for causing financial hardship and bank overdrafts among residents. Following these errors, the Talavera de la Reina City Council began returning funds through the municipal Treasury. Government spokesperson Jesús García-Barroso noted that while some institutions like CaixaBank processed payments automatically, others may require 24 to 48 hours for transactions to reflect in accounts.
