Spanish organized crime asset recovery and enforcement
Overview
Spanish authorities have intensified efforts to combat organized crime through asset recovery and the dismantling of laundering networks.
In its first year of operation, the specialized unit GRACO, established to meet EU directives, recovered €15.5 million across 43 investigations. These operations targeted various assets, including real estate, vehicles, and cryptocurrency, to compensate victims and bolster the public treasury.
In a separate major operation named ‘Omnis’, the Guardia Civil and Europol dismantled a cocaine laundering network linked to the Sánchez Castro brothers. The investigation uncovered a structure of shell companies and fictitious invoicing used to launder over 8.6 million euros. The operation resulted in 44 arrests and the freezing of numerous bank accounts, companies, and properties, though three key leaders remain international fugitives.
