Spanish pharmacy role in elderly healthcare

Overview

The General Council of Official Colleges of Pharmacists (CGCOF) recently concluded its ‘Rural Health Schools for Vulnerable Elderly Patients’ project. This initiative trained 3,318 elderly individuals and caregivers across 126 community pharmacies in 33 provinces. Findings from the project revealed a significant knowledge gap, with approximately 67% of elderly participants and 66.5% of caregivers reporting they had never previously received advice regarding medication use or self-care.

Following this, Cofares and the Royal National Academy of Pharmacy of Spain (Ranfe) addressed the broader challenges posed by Spain’s aging demographic, noting that over 10 million people are aged 65 or older. Experts emphasized the need for community pharmacies to expand their healthcare functions, such as monitoring pharmacotherapy and supporting patients with chronic conditions. To support these needs, Cofares highlighted the importance of efficient pharmaceutical distribution, planning to expand its network of centers to ensure equitable access to medication.
