Spanish physician mortality trends

Overview

A study by the Organización Médica Colegial (OMC) and the Instituto Nacional de Estadística (INE) regarding Spanish physicians shows that while they experienced lower mortality rates than the general population between 2003 and 2022, they tended to die at a younger age. The average age of death for doctors was 72.9 years, compared to 78.6 years for non-medical professionals. This disparity was notably higher among women, who died at an average age of approximately 62 compared to 81 for non-medical women.

Cancer was identified as the primary cause of death for physicians at 38.7%, followed by heart disease and cerebrovascular diseases. While the data highlights the ‘healthy worker effect’ due to higher education and healthcare access, it also emphasizes the need for mental health research and professional protection strategies.
