Authorities in Spain's Catalonia and Valencia regions have implemented restrictions on natural parks to manage environmental risks and large crowds expected during the solar eclipse on August 12. In Catalonia, motorized access to the Natural Parks of the Ports and Serra de Montsant was scheduled for closure between August 11 and August 13 to mitigate fire risks and protect wildlife. Concurrently, advocacy groups in the Valencian Country have called for comprehensive long-term territorial planning to address biodiversity loss, water management, and forest fire prevention. In the Valencian Community, the fire risk level was escalated to level 3 pre-emergency status—the highest risk level—for August 12, 2026. This decision was driven by concerns that spontaneous gatherings of people observing the total solar eclipse could increase fire hazards. As a result, 15 natural parks across the provinces of Castelló, Valencia, and Alicante have been closed, including Albufera, Sierra Calderona, Tinença de Benifassà, and Serra d’Espadà. Specific closures also include Serra d’Irta, Penyagolosa, Prat de Cabanes-Torreblanca, Desert de les Palmes, Camí dels Pelegrins de les Useres, La Pobla de Sant Miquel, Gorges del Cabriel, Xera-Sot de Xera, Túria, Marjal de Pego-Oliva, Serra de Mariola, and Carrascar de la Font Roja. Strict prohibitions are in place regarding camping, lighting fires, barbecues, fireworks, and walking on trails. Access via vehicles or bicycles on forest tracks is prohibited, and interpretation centers are closed. In Murcia, the Territorial Civil Protection Plan has been activated, mobilizing approximately 500 personnel. In Guadalajara, the Aguas Vivas enclosure has been designated as an official observation site for up to 10,000 people, supported by free shuttle buses and traffic restrictions. The eclipse on August 12 is expected to reveal the sun's outer atmosphere, or corona, as white streamers and glowing plasma.
