The construction of Spain’s S-80 class submarine series at Navantia’s Cartagena shipyards is progressing through several technical milestones. In late September, Navantia successfully completed testing of the Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system for the S-83 ‘Cosme García’. This third-generation system uses liquid oxygen and bioethanol to generate hydrogen, allowing the vessel to remain submerged for weeks at a time. By early October, the S-83 reached a further milestone with the installation of its three diesel generator engines. Meanwhile, work Following these developments, Navantia concluded specialized testing of the S-83’s AIP system in October. These tests, which commenced in June, utilized a specialized test bench to simulate real-world conditions, including various depths and speeds. Regarding the operational S-81 ‘Isaac Peral’, the Spanish Ministry of Defense reported that maintenance costs exceeded one million euros over the past year. While over 900 maintenance tasks were performed, the Navy noted that 27 corrective repairs resulting from sea incidents accounted for only 3% of scheduled reviews, a figure significantly lower than the initial 20% estimate. Work continues on the S-84 ‘Mateo García de los Reyes’ during its section assembly phase. The broader program includes the S-81 ‘Isaac Peral’, which is currently in service and participating in NATO exercises, and phase, while the S-82 ‘Narciso Monturiol’, which is undergoing Monturiol’ undergoes testing with expectations for full operational status by the end of the year.
