Spain is strengthening its role in astronomical research and space exploration through the activities of the Yebes Observatory and involvement in European Space Agency (ESA) missions. The Yebes Observatory utilizes a 40-meter radio telescope to conduct international research on interstellar molecules and participates in global interferometry networks. On August 12, 2026, Spain experienced its first total solar eclipse in over a century, a phenomenon that had not occurred in the Iberian Peninsula since 1912. The eclipse passed over more than half of the country, creating deep darkness across thirteen autonomous communities, including Madrid, Galicia, and the Balearic Islands. An estimated 1.5 million people traveled to observe the phenomenon, which lasted approximately two and a half minutes at its peak. The National Geographic Institute’s largest observatory in Yebes, Guadalajara, served as the official monitoring site for the event. To coincide with the eclipse, scientific outreach programs were implemented, featuring public lectures and educational activities for children. Minister of Science Diana Morant emphasized the necessity of providing scientific explanations to combat misinformation, noting that the event would be broadcast widely to demonstrate the value of astronomical observatories. Despite the scientific interest, the event triggered significant health and safety concerns. Consumer authorities issued a recall for seven models of solar eclipse glasses from brands including Lionstar, ECP Eye Care Professional, Pelispan, Homanaje, Orro, Opticalia, and Mó de Multiópticas. The recall was prompted by filters being excessively dark, with transmittance levels below the required minimum, which could lead users to shift the glasses and suffer direct radiation exposure. Medical experts warned that improper protection could cause solar retinopathy, noting that symptoms such as blurred vision or dark spots may not manifest until four to twelve hours after exposure.
