Tensions in the Balearic Islands escalated throughout mid-2026 as residents protested mass tourism, housing shortages, and environmental degradation. Initial actions included increased alcohol regulations and planned demonstrations by groups such as Menys Turisme, Més Vida, and GOB. Conflict intensified following the government's approval of coastal management and agrarian laws, which environmentalists argued would allow for the deregulated development of protected areas like Es Trenc. Protests evolved into mass human chains and significant rallies. Tensions also spiked following the publication of a manual by activist groups allegedly encouraging vandalism, leading to criminal complaints and subsequent arrests of activists. On August 8, a demonstration in Sóller highlighted the housing crisis, noting that property prices have risen 45–50 percent over the last five years. Protesters characterized the situation as a ‘tourism-driven monoculture’ that saturates infrastructure and threatens marine ecosystems. By mid-August, the collective Brunzit organized ‘Sopar a la llesca’ in Palma’s Plaça Major, using communal meals to reclaim public space and critique the perceived privatization of urban areas. On August 19, more than 500 residents participated in a penultimate ‘Sopar a la llesca’ event, which organizers described as a formal critique of local government inaction.
