Following unfavorable election results in Berlin and the Pankow district, the SPD scheduled a public discussion for October 10, 2026. The meeting was intended 2026, to examine campaign errors and determine the party’s role in forming a new Senate. Concurrently, political tensions have risen between the SPD and the Union regarding legislative progress. The Union has accused the SPD of blocking reforms, specifically demanding that Labor Minister Bärbel Bas present pension reform drafts promptly. In response, SPD Parliamentary Manager Dirk Wiese stated that allegations of blockades and public ultimatums make the search for common solutions “more protracted,” calling for compromise to avoid benefiting opponents of democracy. This friction has intensified following demands from CDU Federal Economy Minister Katherina Reiche, who called for the SPD to present a pension reform draft by the end of the year. The Union has further indicated it will withhold approval for income tax reforms until the Labor Ministry submits proposals regarding both pension and labor market reforms.
