Speeding enforcement and police pursuits in Thessaloniki

Authorities in the Thessaloniki region of Greece have conducted several enforcement actions targeting extreme speeding on major roadways. Initial reports detailed the arrest of two drivers for traveling significantly above speed limits on the New Athens–Thessaloniki National Road and the Ring Road, with speeds recorded at 191 km/h and 164 km/h respectively. Police indicated these actions were part of intensive inspections to prevent traffic accidents. Subsequent incidents on the Egnatia Odos highway involved more severe cases. Police arrested an 18-year-old driver following a pursuit near Vagiochori after the individual attempted to evade a checkpoint. Authorities reported the driver lacked a valid license and was accompanied by three individuals without legal residency documentation. Additionally, police launched an investigation into a video circulating on TikTok that allegedly shows a vehicle traveling at speeds exceeding 310 km/h on the same highway. On October 8, 2026, a police pursuit occurred in central Thessaloniki after a driver failed to comply with a signal. The vehicle traveled through central streets, including Aristotelous, before crashing into parked cars at the intersection of Agiou Dimitriou and Arkadiou Poleos streets. The driver abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot; authorities are currently searching for the suspect. Seven undocumented migrants were discovered inside the vehicle, suggesting a human smuggling attempt. The vehicle reportedly bears foreign license plates and is believed to have originated from Serres.
