The 2026 European Sports Week opened in Mardin, Turkey, under the theme ‘Meeting Sports in Mardin’. During the ceremony, Mardin Governor and Deputy Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tuncay Akkoyun highlighted the role of sports in fostering social cohesion and reported significant growth in local infrastructure, noting that sports facilities increased from 6 to 70 and licensed athletes rose from 1,097 in 2002 to 118,016 in 2026. Following these events, Amateur Sports Week is being observed across various Turkish regions from October 5 to 11. Organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports in collaboration with the Amateur Sports Clubs Confederation, the week-long event aims to promote physical activity and encourage participation across all age groups. Celebrations have included wreath-laying ceremonies, parades, and sporting demonstrations in provinces such as Sinop, Mersin, Edirne, Osmaniye, Adana, and Muş. Activities vary by location, ranging from traditional festivals and marches to competitions in football, basketball, volleyball, archery, and athletics. In Muş Bulanık, a traditional sports festival featured disciplines such as mini-golf and tug-of-war, while Edirne scheduled events including cycling tours and chess tournaments. In Eskişehir, a parade moved from Yediler Park to Vilayet Square. Sadri Atam, President of the Eskişehir Amateur Sports Clubs Federation, stated that sports contribute to the academic and cognitive success of children. In Denizli, a parade accompanied by a municipal band was held, with Provincial Director Süleyman Erdoğan emphasizing the role of amateur sports in raising healthy, civic-minded individuals and the necessity for modern infrastructure. Meanwhile, in Sivas, local amateur sports clubs continue to seek municipal support to sustain their activities for the new season. In Bayburt, celebrations at the Yeni Sports Hall included demonstrations in gymnastics, taekwondo, wrestling, and judo.
